In January 2016, photographer and founder of Pure Palestine Brian Megens experienced and captured life in Palestine while being hosted by locals throughout the West Bank. The welcoming and open nature of Palestinian people was particularly noted as it directly contrasted their portrayal in popular media outlets. Brian experienced Palestinians as people that are trying to provide a comfortable life for themselves, family and friends but the struggle to achieve that proves to be enormous due to the ongoing conflict. Nonetheless, the country retains its humanity. This acted as the inspiration for the photography project ‘The Other side of Palestine’
The Kufiya made a special impact along this journey through Palestine. Chinese mass manufacturers control production of Kufiyas and so, there is only one Kufiya factory left in Palestine. ‘The Craftsmanship of the Kufiya’ captures the workings of this last standing Kufiya factory of Palestine. It became clear that the original Kufiya needed to be made accessible for people outside of Palestine as the original Kufiya is a valuable contribution to everyone’s wardrobe. By doing so, Pure Palestine supports local production by trading directly to ensure fair prices with the Hirbawi Textile factory. Pure Palestine aims to send a positive message from a country often solely associated with conflict. Wear with pride, handle with care, wash by hand.
